The story of the zebra ![]() Some years ago a bright participant in a Color Accounting workshop had one of the 'aha' moments people have in the sessions. In a dramatic outburst she exclaimed that - until then - all financial information had looked to her like a zebra: all black and white stripes on a page. She said she couldn't get past that forbidding jail-like image and consequently avoided balance sheets and income statements, even though her job required it. She knew it was 'silly', but there you have it. In our experience, lots of people have negative feelings towards accounting information. Sometimes those negative perceptions are merely annoying niggles. But they can also be debilitating zebras. For any accounting education system to be truly effective, it has to allow the participant to safely put these perceptions aside so they can comfortably begin unlearning and relearning. It's something that we are pretty good at. There is a happy ending. During the workshop, this lovely lady suddenly realized that she could see past the 'zebra'. Courtesy of Color Accounting the financial story became accessible to her in vivid color. Her relief was palpable. Inspired by her exclamation we decided to adopt the zebra as our mascot. So, we'd like you to meet...? Name suggestions welcome please! |
